Perseid meteor showers
11th August 2008
From the 23rd July to the 20th August, the Perseid meteor showers will be visible. The maximum will occur on the night of Monday the 11th August, running into the morning of Tuesday the 12th August. This could be a great show, as tiny fragments of a comet fall through the atmosphere, leaving bright trails as they burn up.
The radiant (the apparent point of origin for the meteor trails) begins the night at roughly north-north-east, 28 degrees above the horizon (21:00 hours) and moves to roughly east, 67 degrees above the horizon (03:00 hours). Look 30-40 degrees away from this point to have the best chance of seeing meteors. Best to wait until the Moon sets a little after 23:20 hours.
