Induction and the start of Courses

Induction to  Modules

Induction to the Modules takes place in October according to the Module Induction Status. Check here for expected dates of the two-step induction process.

Step 0

During September your application and enrolment should be complete. Your confirmation letter enclosed a draft module schedule. You should have a valid WebCT username, you should be able to login to WebCT, but you will not have access to any modules or course materials.

Step 1

Induction by email and WebCT

During this step we finalise the student enrolment lists for each module and give you access to your module on WebCT.  You will receive an Induction Email to your personal email address to say that this step is complete.

Attachments to the email include: Module Schedule and Welcome Letter.

It will ask you to check that your WebCT UserID and Password are active, and that WebCT course list now includes:

  • the module you are studying and
  • the Astronomy Distance Learning area.

You can post welcome messages on the WebCT Noticeboard and start finding your way around the module area.

  • If you have problems with your WebCT login try TroubleShooting.
  • If you have not received a Induction Email within a few days of the expected date, it could be that your enrolment process is not yet complete or that we have been unsuccessful in emailing to the address you gave.

In either case contact the Programme Administrator (01772 893540) or e-mail ucastro@uclan.ac.uk.

The process of loading learning materials into WebCT takes place in parallel will the administrative induction process. The materials should all be in place by the date indicated in the Module Induction Status.

Step 2

Posting of Introductory Pack

All students are sent by post an Introductory Pack.

Its contents vary from module to module, but typically includes:

  • Welcome Letter
  • Module Schedule
  • Course address labels
  • Assessment Coversheets (most modules)
  • CDRom (some modules) that provides a personal copy of the learning materials  available on WebCT.
  • and Workbook (Introduction to Astronomy only).

It is essential for students to have use of a PC with suitable Internet Access for all modules for which the course delivery is via WebCT only.

Internet Access is strongly recommended for all modules, so that students derive maximum benefit from the courses.

Students are responsible for printing their own paper copies if they wish to.
